Faith United was born in 1970 through the merger of Gibbon’s Presbyterian and Methodist congregations — two communities with deep roots and a shared desire to move forward as one.
Founded by early settlers, Gibbon Presbyterian held its first service in 1873, marking the first church worship in Buffalo County. The congregation worshiped in a Spanish mission-style building constructed in 1908, a beloved part of Gibbon’s spiritual landscape.
Rev. William Morse and Rev. Jepter Marsh were among the first to bring the Methodist message to Gibbon. After a fire destroyed the original church in 1900, a new one was built—continuing a legacy of resilience and revival.
Nearby in Lowell, a Methodist Episcopal congregation formed through revival meetings. By 1905, they had their own church and parsonage. In 1952, Lowell’s church officially joined with Gibbon Methodist, further uniting the community.
Talks of merger began in 1968. After many meetings, votes, and careful discernment, Faith United was officially formed in 1970, adopting the United Methodist structure and a new name that reflected shared purpose.
