Rooted in History, Moving in Faith

Faith United was born in 1970 through the merger of Gibbon’s Presbyterian and Methodist congregations — two communities with deep roots and a shared desire to move forward as one.

Gibbon Presbyterian Church (1872–1970)

Founded by early settlers, Gibbon Presbyterian held its first service in 1873, marking the first church worship in Buffalo County. The congregation worshiped in a Spanish mission-style building constructed in 1908, a beloved part of Gibbon’s spiritual landscape.

Gibbon Methodist Church (1872–1970)

Rev. William Morse and Rev. Jepter Marsh were among the first to bring the Methodist message to Gibbon. After a fire destroyed the original church in 1900, a new one was built—continuing a legacy of resilience and revival.

Lowell Methodist Church (1891–1952)

Nearby in Lowell, a Methodist Episcopal congregation formed through revival meetings. By 1905, they had their own church and parsonage. In 1952, Lowell’s church officially joined with Gibbon Methodist, further uniting the community.

The Merger: Faith United Methodist (1970–Today)

Talks of merger began in 1968. After many meetings, votes, and careful discernment, Faith United was officially formed in 1970, adopting the United Methodist structure and a new name that reflected shared purpose.

Key milestones:

  • 1970: Name “Faith United” selected and first administrative board formed

  • 1974–1976: Construction of our current church building

  • 1981: Dedication of our bell tower, honoring past churches

  • Legacy elements preserved:

    • Stained glass from the Presbyterian church

    • Bells from both original congregations

    • Piano and funds from the Lowell church

Built Together, For a Purpose

From auctions and groundbreakings to shared worship and ministry, Faith United’s story is one of unity, courage, and movement—a church set in motion, putting faith into action across generations.
